Percy Grainger was born at Brighton, Victoria in 1882. In 1914 he moved to America and later during a brief spell in the U.S. Army bands he "dished up" the 'Country Gardens' piece which many people now equate with his name. These songs and monlogues from around 1948 have been taken from previously unissued sources: transcription discs made for radio-station airplay and provide an insight into the world of 'live' country music on radio during the formative years of Australian country music. Tex Morton toured with his rodeo and variety shows and was often accompanied by his duet partner 'Sister' Dorrie (Dorothy Ricketts). These discs establish Dorothy as the first female Australian country recording artist. Johnny Ashcroft won Australia's Amateur Hour, a live radio programme broadcast weekly across Australia, and then joined 'The Great Levante Show' the biggest travelling variety theatre in Australia. By the late 1940's Johnny had cut his first record and later recorded the song 'Little Boy Lost', the rest is history.
